ELEVENTH IN LINE

About This Blog
A blog about my life, universe, etc. At any given time you might find something endlessly interesting or just me ruminating on something else, which no one (not even myself) finds interesting. That's the way blogs go, I suppose. Anyway, I was eleventh in line, and you weren't. Hah!

The ethics of complaint letters
Are tricky. There's not much literature on the internet that I can find... specifically relating to the question "when is it worthwhile to write to someone and complain?" This is a problem, because I often feel as though a situation deserves a complaint, but I have rarely been in a circumstance where I felt comfortable just going up to someone and complaining. Yes, a letter does make a more drastic statement than just a few quick words to the guy (or girl) in charge would have, but I'm probably never going to get up the nerve or ambition to say those few quick words at all. I'm not exactly the confrontational sort. Meanwhile, if there's (for example) a waiter who treated me badly, they (and their management) deserve to know about it, because it's going to impact their business. Especially if I'm disinclined to return to that establishment again.

So I'm stuck in a position where it's potentially a serious overstep to write a letter, but where a letter seems to be the only non-confrontational, actually-possible, complaint avenue available. Sigh.

In any case, if you were wondering, Danny A. treated me (and Caroline) badly at Olive Garden this afternoon, and instead of doing some fun blogging, I'm going to be writing a letter to his management. Argh.

Because only so many people can be eleventh in line.
